Founded by Bob Davids with 16 original members in 1971, the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) has grown to more than 6,000 members today. SABR is a member-driven nonprofit organization with chapters across the globe. The mission of SABR is to foster the research and dissemination of the history and record of baseball.
Arizona’s chapter was founded and organized by Scottsdale accountant Bill Suphan in 1992. The first chapter meeting was held at Scottsdale Stadium on November 8 as 20 members and guests attended the Sun City Rays vs. Scottsdale Scorpions Arizona Fall League game and were treated to several research presentations.
When the chapter was born, there were just 51 SABR members in Arizona. Today there are 147. Originally known only as ASABR (Arizona SABR), the chapter was renamed the Flame Delhi Chapter in 1995 to honor the first-born Arizonan to play in the big leagues.
In 1999 the chapter hosted the national SABR convention in Scottsdale. A highlight of the event was when 500 SABR members and guests saw the only no-hitter in Bank One Ballpark (now Chase Field) history. On June 25 Jose Jimenez beat Randy Johnson 1-0 despite Johnson reaching the 2,500 strikeout milestone. Speakers at the convention included Roland Hemond, Thom Brennaman and Yankee legend Tommy Henrich.
From 1993-2001 the chapter produced the premier newsletter, the Hot Corner. In 1997 it published The Arizona Baseball Journal, a 68-page book of members research about Arizona. Some of the articles in the ABJ were repeated when the chapter published Mining Towns to Major Leagues: A History of Arizona Baseball for the 1998 SABR Convention.
In addition to special projects and gatherings, the Flame Delhi Chapter holds quarterly meetings including SABR Day in America each January; the Gala Spring Training Weekend in March; a summer gathering at a ball game; and the Arizona Fall League Conference in November. Except for costs of ballgames and meals, all meetings are free and open to the public.
